FRANCHISE PROMOTIONAL SERIES I n December, Entrepreneur magazine reported that the franchising sector created about 11,000 new establishments and 150,000 new jobs in 2013, outpacing the overall U.S. economy in business formation and growth. The article stated that despite challenges, including an outdated tax code and health care costs, nearly every category is seeing growth. What is it exactly about franchising that has so many people intrigued? To begin with, a franchise allows entrepreneurs to start their own business- without starting from scratch. As the International Franchise Association points out, franchising takes some of the anxiety out of launching a business because you're working with an established product or service, often with a customer base already in place. "You're buying into an already proven system, so you don't have to waste time reinventing the wheel and can instead focus on running your business," says Angela Zerda, director Mosquito Joe of marketing for Mosquito Joe, an outdoor pest control company. And the easiest way to stay focused on your business is to find an industry you're passionate about. The International Franchise Association suggests taking time to explore some key questions in depth: What do you like to do? What do you know how to do? Would you rather sell a product or a service? "Consider the pros and cons of different industries and think about which would fit best with the lifestyle you want," Zerda says. "The right opportunity should be a good fit not only financially but also when it comes to lifestyle, personality, and values." Passion shouldn't be the only key role in your franchise decision, however; be on the lookout for industries expected to grow. Senior care, for instance, is causing quite the stir, as some 8,000 baby boomers are turning 65 years old every day. Entrepreneur named the industry one of the top five to watch in upcoming years, and the Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that by 2020 home health and personal care aides will number more than 1.3 million-a 70 percent increase from 2010. This swell in the retirement-age population has opened the door for companies like Seniors Helping Seniors, an in-home care provider that matches those who want to provide help with those seeking help. Since the company launched in 1998, more than 240 franchises have opened in 38 states Husband and Wife team build a successful business. Building a better life and a better community. Summer and Cory Bullock's goal since day one has been to operate a successful, well-run business together that provides parents and children with the best educational childcare. As Cory completed his naval commitment and Summer's career as an occupational therapist was underway, the Bullock's researched options of owning their own business and decided on childcare. With children of their own, they saw an opportunity to raise the standards in their community, and owning a Kiddie Academy franchise enabled them to combine their passion for children, dream of being business owners and desire for a flexible schedule. In 2008 Kiddie Academy of League City opened, garnering a stellar reputation. As the business developed, they expanded with a second building in 2012. Parents and children are extremely happy to be welcomed by the Bullock's every day. They have made a tremendous impact on the children in their care and improved their community for the future.
