SMALL WONDERS Houston dedicates a weekend to kiddo fun. University of Chicago Folk Festival The word "folk" derives from the German volk, which means "the people as a whole," and so folk music as a style is comprised of songs for the people, usually passed down via oral tradition and often commemorating historical, regional, or personal events. Make your own folk memories at the 54th annual University of Chicago Folk Festival, one of the nation's oldest and best celebrations of the genre. This year's three-day event offers starstudded evening concerts, featuring youthful Irish band The Yanks, blues guitarist Ari Eisinger, traditional balladeers Elizabeth LaPrelle and Anna Roberts-Gevalt, and old-time string band Bigfoot. Mornings and afternoons are devoted to free workshops, including sessions on fiddle and banjo styles, Irish social dancing, and sea shanties. Concerts are held at Mandel Hall, while workshops are at Ida Noyes Hall.
