From the Editor SQUARE ROUTE Legos show us how to build a vibrant future: brick by brick. Dear Reader, In her story about the growing popularity of Legos among adults (starting on page 64), Melinda Mahaffey Icden wonders why the snapping together of these hard-edged playthings so captures the imagination. As someone who used Legos solely as weaponry in childhood (the blocks made for thrillingly unpredictable slingshot ammo), I am probably not qualified to answer. But I will anyway. The real genius of Legos, I would argue, is not in the snapping together but in the pulling apart. Unlike model airplanes, finger painting, education, or even life itself, Legos let you undo. As any writer will tell you, the skill in many a good work lies not just in creation but in redemption. Legos may help teach children that the true glory lies in the redo. Go ahead, snap those words and ideas and experiments together, kids. Then unsnap them, and see if you can do better. 20 SPIRIT FEBRUARY 2014 Imagine if all of life were Legos-not hard to do if you have been to one of the half-dozen Legoland Discovery Centers in this country. Now imagine unsnapping certain parts of your life and doing them better. Personally, I would like to reassemble the bricks that make up my junior year in college, when ... well, never mind. I mean, what if you could unsnap a jillion fast-food meals and cheap beers and stupid comments and hurt feelings, and then snap them back together into a shiny, perfect past? But, then again, maybe the past isn't for unsnapping and resnapping. The future: That's where the renewal takes place. So here's to the resolutions we made last month, and to the colorful future we hope to cobble together in 2014 and beyond. Your own Legoland awaits.
