Southwest Airlines honors a Team that keeps training equipment in topflight condition. Each year on Valentine's Day, Southwest Airlines recognizes one hardworking, behind-the-scenes Team with a special honor: the Heroes of the Heart Award. We're happy to announce that our Flight Simulation Technicians are the recipients of this year's distinction. They were chosen from nominations submitted by Employees from across the country. This highly experienced and talented Team consists of 26 Flight Simulation Technicians and one Simulation Coordinator. Together they're responsible for the maintenance, engineering, servicing, and modification of the Flight Operations Team's full-flight simulators, flight training devices, cockpit procedures trainer, and aircraft emergency equipment. The Technicians, who are affectionately known as Sim Techs, provide 'round-theclock coverage in three shifts. (Southwest's Flight Operations Training Center is a 24/7 operation.) At the start of each day, the Sim Tech staff conducts preflight checks on all flight simulators and flight training devices. The Team performs hardware and software troubleshooting and repairs as needed to keep training devices in working order. In addition, Sim Techs update the simulation hardware and software, keep simulation scenarios and airport visual scenes current, construct special training equipment as needed, and maintain all 156 SPIRIT APRIL 2014 HEARTY APPROVAL SWA applauds the Flight Simulation Technicians. the necessary records. Because of this Team's dedication, Southwest's flight simulation equipment has a historical reliability rate in excess of 99 percent. In addition to their day-to-day responsibilities, in 2013 Southwest's Sim Techs: * obtained and installed rafts for overwater training. * constructed and installed portable life vest training units. * designed and fabricated new, portable display boards for emergency equipment training. * upgraded and modified the Inflight Cabin Evacuation Trainer. Congratulations to the Flight Simulation Technicians on being named our Heroes of the Heart!
