Composing New Music With Old Roots Qualcomm Institute composer in residence Lei Liang's award-winning work creates new musical forms by blending Chinese tradition with technology. Hailed as "an important musical philosopher" by Wire, Liang is considered one of Wire, the most exciting voices in new music. Lei Liang Mapping the Human Mind Neuroscientist Jacopo Annese aims to create 2-D and 3-D structural maps of the human brain. These maps will provide important points of reference throughout the campus's ongoing research efforts under the Obama administration's BRAIN Initiative. Jacopo Annese Transmitting Data via Tattoos Todd Coleman's research focuses on wireless tattoo technology that will transmit vital medical data, bringing yesterday's science fiction into today's reality. His ultrathin devices can monitor brain waves, heart rates and other vital signs without tying a patient to a machine, an especially promising advance for neonatal care. Todd Coleman New Techniques to Crack an Ancient Mystery Cosmochemist Morgan Nunn Martinez is a doctoral candidate in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry. By extracting and studying water in meteorites-including a 2.1-billion-year-old Martian rock- she hopes to refine theories of how water formed and was distributed throughout our solar system. Morgan Nunn Martinez Mentoring the Next Generation Eric Chen and Rommie Amaro Rommie Amaro works on models of proteins that will lead to new drugs that battle infectious viruses and bacteria. She's also mentoring the next generation of scientists. She launched CompChemBioCAMP, a new research camp designed to retain women in the sciences, and mentors Eric Chen, winner of the 2013 Google Science Fair Grand Prize for his influenza research.
