"They're for my little sister's wedding." "Are you catering it?" Beth rolled her eyes. She was in her mid-30s, blonde, kind of harried looking. "They're the centerpieces for the tables." "Doesn't seem like you're too excited about the big day." "No ... it's going to be great. It's just a lot of logistics." "That's why I eloped," I said. "Then again, my wife still hasn't forgiven me." We talked for a few minutes about the wedding industry and what a giant, glorious con it was. "You know what they say," I said. "The bigger the wedding, the sooner the divorce." A sudden pinch of worry creased Beth's lovely face. "Do you like the guy your sister is marrying?" I asked. Beth took a deep breath and eyed me for a second. I suppose she was trying to decide whether to confide in a perfect stranger. "He's a charming guy," Beth said. "And his family has money. But I don't really trust him." She went on to describe an incident in which she'd showed up early to a restaurant and spotted her future brother-inlaw talking to the pretty, young hostess. "He put his hand on her lower back. Not on her butt, just above it, and something about that gesture unsettled me. It wasn't that he was hitting on her. It was more the feeling that he had the right to touch her like that.
