Calendar ATLANTA JUN 7 Flying Colors Butterfly Festival "The caterpillar does all the work, but the butterfly gets all the publicity," cracked comedian George Carlin. And that's how things take off at the 14th annual Flying Colors Butterfly Festival, a two-day celebration of the Papilionoidea at Chattahoochee Nature Center, situated just north of the city on 127 acres in Roswell. For children, the event offers up the sheer wonder of witnessing nature at work and play as several hundred free-flying butterflies cut vibrant swaths about the grounds. For metaphor-prone adults, there is the cathartic pleasure of gazing upon creatures ("not quite birds, as they were not quite flowers, mysterious and fascinating," according to late English novelist Elizabeth Goudge) that have at last broken free of their bindings to transform. This year, for the first time, the fest will introduce The Butterfly Encounter, which runs through July 13 and invites guests of all ages to hand-feed more than 250 of the graceful flyers. Also serving as a fundraiser for the Nature Center, the festival honors the nearly 20,000 species of the lovely insect found worldwide and features live music, photography and entomology exhibits, as well as arts, crafts, face painting, and a butterfly costume parade.
