IN LIVING COLOR + Spotlight Visitors look on the bright side at San Antonio's Travis Park. A Place to Call Home Southwest helps breathe new life into familiar community spaces. At Southwest Airlines, our Purpose is to connect people to what's important in their lives through friendly, reliable, and low-cost air travel. Often, the important moments that happen during those connections include a special place-a location that has meaning, brings people together, and creates a sense of community. We believe that public places- like neighborhood parks, community gardens, and downtown squares-are truly the heart of the communities that our Employees call home and that our Customers LUV to visit. The idea of supporting and revitalizing these spaces is one that speaks to our hearts. Behind many great public places around the world is a quiet, 30-year-old movement called Placemaking, which is the brainchild of the nonprofit organization Project for Public Spaces (PPS). Placemaking breathes new life 124 SPIRIT JUNE 2014 into neighborhoods by reimagining public spaces around the needs and desires of the local community and by strengthening connections between people and the places they share. At Southwest, when it comes to making decisions about our business, we have always put people first; what attracts us to Placemaking is that it does the same in the process of designing and improving public spaces. The Southwest Airlines Heart of the Community program, a national, grant-awarding initiative launched this past April, was developed to support and revitalize America's public spaces. In pilot projects started in 2013, Southwest and PPS collaborated with the Downtown Providence Parks Conservancy to create a new place for children and families to play in Burnside Park and Kennedy Plaza, in the heart of downtown Providence, Rhode Island; we worked with the Downtown Detroit Partnership to bring summertime fun to Motor City's Campus Martius Park; and in response to feedback received during a series of public Placemaking workshops, Southwest and the City of San Antonio's Center City Development Office undertook the project of reinvigorating historic Travis Park. We look forward to supporting the communities we serve throughout the U.S. and in our new international destinations with projects that help create these public spaces that are the heart of communities. -Megan Wood
