Your Words pithy comments meant to entertain rather than express what people really feel. Sound bites replace conversation, and mere acknowledgment replaces real connection. I agree with Almond's conclusion that initiating conversations with people around you is awkward but makes you feel more human. Interpersonal connection has special value. Thank you for such a thoughtful piece. times, unpleasant details about their lives. I was almost moved to tears by the honesty of the exchanges between strangers. After I finished reading, I turned to the gentleman sitting next to me on the plane. We enjoyed a wonderful conversation for the duration of the flight. Thank you for your beautiful insight and for reminding us of the forgotten beauty of face-to-face human interaction. -J O N AT H A N K I M O A K L A N D, C A L I FO R N I A - M A R I S S A C H AV E Z E L PA S O, T E X A S We were tempted to "like" your letter, Jonathan; instead, we'll offer you our personal thanks. Southwest flights tend to be talkative to start with. That appears to have been even truer during April. STORYTELLER COLLAR COMMENTARY At 33 years old, I'm on the older end of the millennial generation. I still remember the earliest car and mobile phones; I'm also your typical business executive-checking email on my smartphone, connecting with colleagues on LinkedIn and friends and family on Facebook-which is why I wholeheartedly appreciated Steve Almond's "Connection Error" in the April issue of Spirit. I smiled when I read, "It's not technology that's caused the social atomization of our public spaces ... it's the frantic rush of capitalism." It reminds me that I should be enjoying life more and telling my story rather than checking my email. That is, after all, what "we were mainly put on earth to do." Well said, sir! Thank you, Southwest Airlines, for making me look like a genius. During a recent flight to San Antonio to watch my son's college baseball team play, I was getting my Yorkie, Torre, settled under the seat in front of me. My dog-loving seatmates noticed his adorable bow-tie collar, so I started to brag about the company who makes them, Silly Buddy, which I had found on Etsy. Shortly afterward, while reading Spirit, one of the women noticed that Silly Buddy was featured in "The New American Dream" article [March 2014]. What an awesome coincidence! You certainly picked a quality company. And without your pet travel policy, I never would've been able to show off the product in the first place. Now if Torre could just start earning Rapid Rewards Points... - B R O O K E PA R K I N S O N IRVING, TEXAS We're all for capitalism, but we agree on that frantic rush part. Technology shouldn't be a tether. FACE TIME "Connection Error" by Steve Almond was so touching and so relevant to modern society. As a twentysomething who is part of the smartphone era, I, too, am often guilty of being consumed by my phone. The people with whom Mr. Almond conversed revealed raw, intimate, and, at  -A M Y D e R O S A L O M B A R D, I L L I N O I S Just reading Spirit makes you look like a genius, Amy. We'll be sure to pass along the suggestion about Rapid Rewards for Yorkies. CORRECTIONS In "Your Adventure In Santa Fe" [April 2014], we incorrectly stated the city's population, which is approximately 69,204. Also, in April's Calendar section, we misreported the favored winner of the Preakness Stakes as well as several other details concerning the event, including that it's called "The People's Party." We regret these errors. http://WWW.SIDEWALKFEST.COM http://WWW.SIDEWALKFEST.COM
