TRAVEL PROMOTIONAL SERIES St. Michaels STAY Resembling Commodore Perry's cabin on the warship U.S.S. Niagara, Belmond Inn at Perry Cabin was originally built by a Navy veteran of the War of 1812 who served as an aide-decamp to the commodore. Today, this luxury waterfront resort lures visitors with a soothing spa, a pool, loaner bikes, and high tea in the afternoon. Belmond Inn at Perry Cabin is situated among lush gardens. Full of historic houses, St. Michaels looks much like it did in the 1800s. SAVOR: The Crab Claw Restaurant, nestled in the heart of the harbor, is an idyllic setting for cracking crabs. Find a seat on the outdoor deck, and watch sailboats and yachts vie for docking rights while ducks and rockfish vie for attention-and dinner scraps-in the water below. SEE The best way to explore this town is to stroll the sidewalks. St. Michaels is home to dozens of indie boutiques that sell everything from antiques to hot sauce, furnishings to clothing, toys to books. Take a break at one of three award-winning tasting rooms: St. Michaels Winery, Eastern Shore Brewing, and the newest addition, Lyon Distilling Company, which 100 SPIRIT JULY 2014 makes small-batch whiskey and rum. For a historical overview of life in this region, there's no better place than the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum, which has interpretative installations and historic buildings and offers visitors a chance to work on an old skiff alongside master shipwrights. Warned of an attack, the residents hung lanterns in the trees outside of town so that when the British arrived at the harbor at night, they perceived the town to be on a bluff. The Red Coats trained their cannons high and overshot the town. Legend has it that only one house-known today as the Cannonball House-was hit during the attack when a cannonball fell through the chimney and rolled down the front stairs. Today, this charming town looks much the way it did in the 1800s, with winding lanes and historic houses.
