I have been immensely blessed with a loving family, a job that fulfills me each and every day, and a close-knit community of friends and neighbors. These are what social scientists pinpoint as the keys to happiness-family, work, and community. In addition to my family at home, we are a Family here at Southwest Airlines. We treat each other accordingly and consider our Customers to be guests in our home. Hopefully you feel a sense of warmth and hospitality when one of our Employees greets you or when you step onboard one of our airplanes. 12 SPIRIT JULY 2014 I've found that in order for work to be fulfilling, you must have a clearly defined Purpose. Ours at Southwest is to connect people to what's important in their lives through friendly, reliable, and lowcost air travel. Our People have delivered on that Purpose for more than four decades. As a result, we've been able to provide job security for our Employees and low fares for our Customers-and we've managed to have a little fun along the way! When I think about community, I think about what it means to be a good neighbor. After all, our communities are where our People live and work and where our Customers love to visit. At Southwest, we think being a good global corporate citizen is our duty. We demonstrate our commitment through the passion of our Employees-who, in 2013 alone, volunteered more than 144,000 hours with the causes that matter most to them-and through several longstanding partnerships with charitable organizations. Community also means taking care of the world in which we live, conserving our resources, and operating in a responsible manner. By reducing greenhouse gas emissions through our fuel conservation efforts, by helping revitalize public spaces through our Placemaking initiative, and by cleaning up public parks as part of our From the Heart program, we strive to increase the quality of life in the cities we serve.
