In 1995, artist Bob Cassilly set out to create an all-ages fun house by
showcasing quirky objects he found around the city. The result:
the eclectic City Museum. You'll know it by the functioning Ferris
wheel on the roof, a 1940 model found in a barn and restored to
glory five years ago. A hodgepodge of oddball items that visitors are
free to touch, the museum is constantly adding to its collection with
new finds and donations from around the world. "We accept things
that make us happy," says director Rick Erwin. You'll be joyful too
when you sail down the 10-story spiral slide and crawl through the
industrial-size cooling coil once used to chill beer at AnheuserBusch. "Until Cassilly's death two years ago, everything came from
his head," says Erwin. "Now we build in his spirit." citymuseum.org
