TRAVEL PROMOTIONAL SERIES Havre de Grace This waterfront town at the head of the Chesapeake Bay saw action during the War of 1812. Manning the cannons to fend off a British attack on May 3, 1813, John O'Neill was the only man who did not flee in fear. He was subsequently captured by the English and condemned to death, but his brave 16-year-old daughter persuaded the Brits to let her father go. O'Neill, an Irish immigrant, became known as the hero of Havre de Grace and was later appointed to the prestigious post of lighthouse keeper. Today, visitors can celebrate this local hero by visiting the Concord Point Lighthouse, one of the oldest in operation on the East Coast, which lights up its Fresnel lens nightly. Crab cakes and oysters steal the show at MacGregor's Restaurant. STAY The Vandiver Inn is a charming 19-room Victorian B&B located in downtown Havre de Grace. Rooms retain historic touches like fireplaces and the innkeepers serve a hearty breakfast with unusual specialties like sweet potato pancakes. SAVOR Locals flock to MacGregor's Restaurant for crab cakes and local oysters. The kitchen's signature dish, "Harbor of Mercy" Rockfish, is made with 96 SPIRIT JULY 2014 stripped bass fresh from the Chesapeake Bay paired with locally grown tomatoes, sweet corn, and asparagus. Aim for a seat on the enclosed deck, which overlooks the bay. SEE Mt. Felix Winery, which has a broad view of the Chesapeake Bay, features wines dedicated to local historical heroes. The owner is often on hand to explain the grape-growing process, and tastings are available Wednesday through Sunday, or by appointment. The Havre de Grace Decoy Museum offers visitors a glimpse at waterfowl decoy carving, recognized now as an American folk art. In addition to its permanent exhibits, the museum has carving demonstrations on the weekends for your viewing pleasure. STAR SPANGLED CELEBRATION Throughout the state of Maryland, there are special events, reenactments, exhibits, concerts, and even geocaching opportunities that commemorate the 200th anniversary of "The Star-Spangled Banner" and the events that led to the American victory over the British in the War of 1812. The Star-Spangled Banner National Historic Trail leads visitors around Maryland (as well as Virginia and D.C.) to important sites that helped define history. For more info, visit starspangledtrail.net The Star-Spangled celebration culminates September 10-16 in Baltimore during the Star-Spangled Spectacular, when tall ships converge on the harbor, fireworks are set off over the Inner Harbor and Fort McHenry, and the Blue Angels soar overhead.
