The American Cancer Society turned 100, and we've been celebrating lives saved and progress made during a century of achievements. But as our 100th birthday year comes to a close, our work to finish the fight is far from finished. Coming next May, 12 months since our birthday observances officially began: The inaugural Birthday Ball will kick off at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel in Los Angeles, a new yearly reminder of this important milestone birthday and of the progress we can make together. Business leaders, philanthropists, sponsors and entertainment figures will gather to raise critical funds in support of our tireless efforts to help people stay well, get well, find cures and fight back. You can count on the Society to continue leading the charge into our next century. This time of year, there's heightened awareness about breast cancer with National Breast Cancer Awareness Month having just ended. November spotlights lung cancer awareness, and the annual American Cancer Society Great American Smokeout® occupies its customary spot on the calendar, the third Thursday of the month. Also in November, the fight against all types of cancer will be showcased on a global stage in Cape Town, South Africa. The Society is proud to be a sponsor of the World Cancer Leaders' Summit, featuring nearly 200 high-profile participants including leaders in the cancer fight, ministers of health, heads of state, United Nations officials and private-sector partners. The theme of this year's gathering is Closing the Cancer Divide by 2025, underscoring the urgent need to raise awareness among top decision makers to ensure cancer is a global health priority. As the traditional season of giving arrives and 2013 comes to a close, we need your help more than ever to finish the fight. Quite simply: We can't do it without you. On behalf of the Society, thanks for your time and generosity during our 100th birthday year and your commitment to continuing those efforts in the years ahead. Together, we can make this century cancer's last. Gratefully yours, John R.
