The generosity of donors to the
American Cancer Society is truly
awe-inspiring. A few facts and figures
about the fight against breast cancer:

»
In 2012, nearly 89,000 breast
cancer patients and their caregivers
and families received guidance in
navigating the health care system.
Corporate partners also play a
major role in fighting breast cancer.
Since 1996, Lee Jeans has raised
more than $89 million through its
Lee National denim day program,
helping thousands, while in 2012,
Walgreens, through its Way to Well
Commitment program, helped
nearly 40,000 women receive
mammograms.
Early detection remains critical in the fight
against breast cancer. In 2010, two in three u.S.
women (67%) 40 and older reported having a
mammogram within the past two years. The
mammography screening rate peaked in 2000,
declined slightly, and has been stable since 2005.
Those are just some of the key findings by the
American Cancer Society included in a clinical journal and its consumer version, Breast Cancer Facts & Figures, 2013-2014. The reports,
published every two years, provide detailed analyses of breast cancer incidence,
mortality and survival trends, plus information on detection, treatment and factors
that influence risk and survival.
"Continued progress in the control of breast cancer," say Society researchers, "will
require sustained and increased efforts to provide high-quality screening, diagnosis
and treatment to all segments of the population."

how would Tamoxifen and herceptin ever have become effective
cancer-fighting drugs without the
scientific research that led to their
discovery? And how would that
research ever have been funded
without the support of the American Cancer Society? The Society
currently has $86 million invested
in breast cancer research grants.
