Stay WEll Awareness GuiDE DEtailS proviSionS of nEW hEalth CarE laW The American Cancer Society has updated its consumer guide on the health care law known as the Affordable Care Act. The Health Care Law: How It Can Help People With Cancer and Their Families describes how provisions of the health care law can help people with cancer and their families access lifesaving treatment. The timing couldn't be better since major portions of the law are scheduled to take effect January 1, 2014. TEAMInG UP WITH THE nFL Since 2009, the National Football League has conducted an annual breast cancer promotion, A Crucial Catch: Annual Screening Saves Lives, to boost the American Cancer Society's efforts to inform women 40 and older about the importance of annual breast cancer screenings. Efforts include team participation, player public service announcements and an online auction. All auction proceeds during october (national Breast Cancer Awareness Month) benefit the Society and team charities. The nFL and the Society extend A Crucial Catch to the younger generation by contacting youth and high school football coaches nationwide, offering suggestions on how to "go pink" to help finish the fight against breast cancer. Visit nfl.com/pink for videos and stories of how this partnership is making a difference. 8 Triumph fall-winter 2013 The guide features stories of real people who have battled cancer, and discusses how terms of the health care law apply to the Society's original "4 A's" that define meaningful health coverage: adequacy, affordability, availability and administrative simplicity. The guide is part of the continuing efforts by the Society and the American Cancer Society Cancer Action networkSM (ACS CAn)-the Society's nonprofit, nonpartisan advocacy affiliate-to educate the public about the health care law, which includes provisions that: » Require insurance plans sold in state health insurance marketplaces to cover essential benefits needed to prevent, treat and survive a disease such as cancer » Improve access to health coverage for low-income, uninsured people through Medicaid in states that have chosen to accept federal funds for that purpose » Ensure that people with pre-existing conditions such as cancer are not denied coverage and receive access to lifesaving care » Provide proven preventive care such as mammograms and colonoscopies at no cost to patients (currently in effect) Get your free copy of the guide by calling 1.800.227.2345. http://www.nfl.com/pink
