Coaches @ vs. Cancer By BRIAn Cook Partnership between college basketball and the Society has helped raise awareness-and more than $87 million. 20 Believe it or not, Coaches vs. Cancer turned 20 this year. "Everything goes by so quickly," muses Norm Stewart, the legendary former University of Missouri men's basketball coach who helped establish the program. Businesses and fans pledged donations for every three-point shot the Tigers made that season, and soon some $250,000 had been raised. Stewart says Quick asked him to boost its visibility through the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC); in 1993 it evolved into the nationwide Coaches vs. Cancer program. "I said let's do something that shows who we [coaches] really are," says Stewart, 78, a colon cancer survivor. Moreover, he had lost his mom to cancer, "so it was a no-brainer, wanting to do something." Today, it's a partnership between the Society and the NABC that has raised more than $87 million for research and to deliver services to patients and their families. The signature fundraiser is the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic, one of the top early season basketball tournaments. Boosting awareness is also a priority, and coaches do their part during games in arenas nationwide the last weekend of January for the Suits And SneakersSM promotion-a distinctive interpretation of "business casual" attire. "I've had some great lineups over the years, but I've got the best lineup now," quips Stewart, referring to the high-profile members of the Coaches vs. Cancer Council. His wife, Virginia, also helps raise awareness and money. "As a coach, someone's always telling you that you have a must-win," says Stewart, who's enshrined in the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame. "Well the fight against cancer is a must-win. We're working toward victory. Everybody can contribute and everybody wins."
