Celebrate New Orleans Art. Culture. Music. Art of the State A groundbreaking donation leads to a major exhibition at The Historic New Orleans Collection. The diverse group of more than 350 objects, paintings, sketches, and pottery ranges from impressionist works to cubism and modern styles, and remains the largest single donation of visual art ever received by the museum. Last October, THNOC opened the Laura Simon Nelson Galleries for Louisiana Art in its recently completed Perrilliat House to display a rotation of pieces from Nelson’s original collection. Not all of the featured artists were natives of Louisiana, but they did all work in the state, and many found inspiration from it — a nod to Nelson’s passion for celebrating the Bayou State’s signiﬁcant artistic heritage. Particularly noteworthy are 30 paintings by some of Louisiana’s most prominent artists, including Jacques Guillaume Lucien Amans, Josephine Marien Crawford, and Ellsworth and William Woodward, inﬂuential contributors to the Gulf-South region’s artistic development. The exhibition has garnered enormous praise and public attention — so much so that THNOC has recently extended its stay through August. Nelson donated her collection with the hope that it would be preserved and appreciated as an emblem of Louisiana artistry for years to come.
