APRIL 2013
Developed by visionary investors and city planners, this swath of the city, much of it stretching along Julia and Camp Streets, is a blend of
world-class mixed-space enterprise, museums,
high-end condos, cafes, restaurants, shops, and
galleries.
History, Evolution, and Life in NOAD
Set in the historic American Sector (one of the
city’s oldest areas), this diverse neighborhood
was once lined with beautiful townhomes and
churches. As New Orleans’s fortunes began to
rise, the city expanded north into the Garden
District, leaving the lower areas to experience a
shift toward commercial use. Many spaces
along the Mississippi fell into disrepair. Then

in 1984, as the city prepared for the World’s
Fair, interest reemerged in this historic riverfront area.
“It wasn’t long before forward-thinking
developers took old warehouses and turned
them into apartments for high-end urban professionals,” explains Richard Nesbitt, president
of NOAD and owner of D.O.C.S. Gallery.
Times have certainly changed since Nesbitt
first purchased his building in 1989. More than
20 years later, many of his neighbors own upscale condos.
What to Do in NOAD
“Life here is like a gumbo,” says Nesbitt.
“There are so many eclectic things to do.”
Visitors can stroll the Riverwalk at the end of
Julia Street and shop for everything from clothing to perfume. Post-Katrina roads are repaved
and perfect for jogging or cycling. But, of
course, the main reason to come is for the arts.
Four museums fall under the NOAD umbrella. History buffs should beeline for The
National WWII Museum, featuring an interactive series of exhibitions. Upon entry, visitors
