Celebrate New Orleans Art. Culture. Music. The Heart of New Orleans BY ELLIE BALDINI Meet two of the Museum District’s cultural all-stars. 945 Magazine Street New Orleans, LA 504.528.1944 nationalww2museum.org 1418 Governor Nicholls Street New Orleans, LA 504.566.1136 noaam.org 122 APRIL 2013 The National WWII Museum How did America’s official WWII Museum come to be in New Orleans, home of jazz and Mardi Gras? Because it was here that Andrew Higgins designed and built the legendary Higgins boats, the landing craft that Dwight Eisenhower told historian Stephen Ambrose won WWII for the Allies. Ambrose founded the museum in 2000, and today, it’s an impressive campus of exhibition pavilions and interactive experiences for all ages, from the Tom Hanks 4-D film Beyond All Boundaries to iconic WWII aircraft, and from powerful personal stories to Final Mission, the USS Tang Submarine Experience. Explore the war that changed the world and feel America’s strengths and values alongside the added delight of live musical entertainment in usairwaysmag.com the Stage Door Canteen and chef John Besh’s specialties in The American Sector. The New Orleans African American Museum Tremé, the oldest black community in the United States, is known for embodying the history, art, and culture of New Orleans, so housing the New Orleans African American Museum (NOAAM) in the beautiful MeilleurGoldthwaite Villa proved to be a natural fit. Considered one of the city’s finest examples of a Creole villa, the former plantation covers an entire block of the famous neighborhood. Built from 1828 to 1829, the home (top right) retains many of its original decorative details. Once on the grounds, walk through the serene gardens dotted with courtyards made of original handmade brick. Within the seven historic buildings, visitors discover cultural art and artifacts that highlight the city’s African American heritage. The museum will undergo a renovation in the spring; in the interim, it’s launching a pop-up gallery at the offices of the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival and a new tour, Walking Tours of Tremé. For more info, call 504.566.1136 or visit noaam.org.
