have a great view here,” she adds. “In the summer you can look out and see the sailboats and the planes coming in. I really do enjoy it.” Her advice? “Love what you do. I haven’t worked long enough to hate my job.” Meet: bette Nash title: flight attendant tiMe with uS airwayS: 55 years “Of course I remember my first flight,” says Bette Nash, US Airways’ most senior employee. “It was from Miami to Detroit.” She explains how she had to write down everyone’s food order and bring it on a heavy white tray because there were no carts. That was in 1957 with Eastern Airlines’ shuttle service, which later became part of US Airways. In 1961, Nash started working on shuttle flights, which offered service between New York, Boston, and Washington. She’s been working shuttle routes ever since, and she’s seen a host of changes. “We used to have to collect the fares on board the shuttle. It would get really difficult when we had to cancel for some reason because I’d have to give back the fares to everyone.” Now there are carts and computers that have made her job easier, but it’s still the people that Nash cherishes the most. “It’s like we’re our own family. People call us the ‘shuttle people,’ ” Nash says. She explains that the shuttle also has a nickname thanks to her. “Someone began calling it the Nash Dash.” Which makes perfect sense since Nash rarely misses a day of work. When she does, people notice. “We have our regulars, and we really get to know these people,” she says. “You just wouldn’t have the enthusiasm without them.” Nash’s enthusiasm certainly shines through. She proudly wears her gold wings, US Airways’ gift for flight attendants with 50 years of service. “I want people to know that this is a wonderful job,” she says. “I have always loved doing this. I’ll never forget on a flight to Detroit, I looked out the window and thought, ‘I’m so lucky that I’m here.’ It’s been a wonderful ride all the way.” usairwaysmag.com february 2013 63 http://www.bondurant.com http://www.bondurant.com
