It bubbles up from the street.’” Walk down the street — any street — in New Orleans, and you’ll see what he means. “This city is a very sensory place by nature,” Perry says. “People travel so much that the hotels, the restaurants, the cities all look the same. But not in New Orleans. Your eyes see different things here. The architecture is so vivid. The cuisine is so different from any other place in the country. Flavors are more substantial, more complex. There’s music and painting and artists on the streets. Art is an element of everything that we are.” usairwaysmag.com That Big Easy Flavor In New Orleans, music and food are just as much a part of the city’s cultural fabric as the museums. “It’s often said that a person growing up here either learns how to play an instrument or becomes a phenomenal cook,” Perry says. Visit the place where jazz began. In the late 1800s, slaves gathered in Congo Square, in Tremé’s Armstrong Park, to play drums. When those drums were combined with the sound of European horns, jazz was born. There are dozens of music clubs around the city; iconic spots include Blue Nile, Snug Harbor, Irvin Mayfield’s Jazz Playhouse, and Preservation Hall. The State of Louisiana declared 2013 as the “Year of Music,” with statewide celebrations all year long. In New Orleans, the Old U.S Mint historic landmark hosts live concerts as part of its Music at the Mint series.
