US Airways - April 2013 - (Page 87)
days of the genre.
Two of the city’s biggest music festivals take
the stage this month. During French Quarter
Fest (April 11–14), some 800 musicians perform on 20 stages. Two weeks later, Jazz Fest
(April 26–May 5) brings some of the biggest
names in music to town. In fact, it’s probably
easier to ask, “Who’s not playing?” This year,
performers include B. B. King, Billy Joel, Dave
Matthews Band, Maroon 5, John Mayer, The
Black Keys, Willie Nelson, Frank Ocean,
Phoenix, and local trumpeter Kermit Ruffins.
Just like music, food is an integral ingredient of New Orleans culture, whether it’s a bowl
of gumbo or a seasonally inspired plate at one
of the city’s top tables.
The staples of local cuisine are Cajun- and
Creole-inspired. There’s gumbo and jambalaya,
po’boys and muffulettas, fried dough and fried
oysters. And then there are the celebrity chefs.
Everyone knows Emeril Lagasse — he has
three restaurants here — and John Besh has
six, including his flagship Restaurant August.
Paul Prudhomme, of K-Paul’s Louisiana
Kitchen, led the “Cajun cookin’” trend (he’s
responsible for the blackened redfish craze).
But New Orleans’ culinary talent is the real
thing: Last year, eight local chefs were nominated for James Beard awards.
What else makes food an art form here?
There’s a museum dedicated to it, the Southern Food & Beverage Museum, and food festivals galore: The New Orleans Wine and Food
Experience (May 22–25) features more than
250 wineries and 100 local restaurants, and the
Louisiana Seafood Festival (October 11–13)
celebrates the Gulf’s bounty. Others include
Crescent City Blues & BBQ (October 18–20),
Tremé’s Creole Gumbo Festival (November
9–10), and the Oak Street Po-Boy Festival
(November).

In New Orleans, there’s a museum for just
about everything. Fine arts? Check. Southern
art? Yes. History? There are several. Voodoo,
