US Airways - April 2013 - (Page 93)

That “temple of art” now flourishes under the innovative leadership of Director Susan M. Taylor, who is committed to weaving NOMA more deeply into the city’s fabric. Her mission? That visitors think of NOMA as their museum — an idea Delgado would no doubt approve. NOMA now has 46 galleries housing what is, in any terms, an outstanding permanent collection. With nearly 40,000 objects, the installations and exhibitions appeal to casual visitors and art buffs alike, with historical periods represented from the Italian Renaissance to the best of the contemporary world. A wealth of American and European art — particularly French — makes up much of the collection, with names such as Monet, Renoir, Picasso, and Pollock all part of its dynamic stable. Louisiana artists also have a marked presence, and the museum boasts photography, ceramics, and glassworks from cultures around the globe, plus outstanding holdings in African, pre-Columbian, and Asian art. Sculpture shapes a huge part of NOMA’s artistic life. Free to the public, the Sydney and Walda Besthoff Sculpture Garden is a five-acre landscaped sanctuary, with more than 60 striking sculptures surrounded by lush subtropical horticulture. Where else can you stroll past a Henry Moore while breathing in the fragrance of magnolias and jasmine? It’s a museum that truly belongs to everyone, from small children to senior citizens. NOMA runs a comprehensive program of educational talks, public events, and special exhibitions as well as festivals and family days. Future exhibitions will illuminate the history of innovation and design in decorative arts from the World’s Fairs, explore the history of photography at NOMA, and address Southern identity. If Delgado were around today to see what NOMA has become, he would find his temple alive and well, and drawing in a diverse slice of the public as he always hoped it would.
