PHOTOS COURTESY OF RIDEAU VINEYARD It's the work and passion of owner and vintner Iris Rideau, a native of the Crescent City, who moved to the Santa Ynez Valley in 1990 and brought with her the food, music, and easygoing vibe of Creole culture. She also restored a historic California property and began crafting award-winning Rhône varietals. Given its emphasis on Syrah, Viognier, Mourvedre, Roussane, and Grenache, it should come as no surprise that Rideau nabbed "Best in Class" at the 2013 Grand Harvest Awards for its 2012 Estate Reserve Viognier, which was also considered one of the ten best wines in the competition. Rideau offers classes and events inspired by Iris' love of pairing food and wine, at which guests can sample gumbo and jambalaya made from family recipes. The winery's most popular tour - rated No. 1 on Trip Advisor for the Solvang region - is its TravelZoo.com package, featuring two tastings per person, tips on wine etiquette, and more. "People come and stay all day," Iris says. "It reminds me of growing up in the South." Behind Rideau's convivial atmosphere, Iris takes winemaking as seriously as she did her successful career in the financial industry. "It starts in the vineyard, and we have a fantastic winemaking team," she says. "I'm also a perfectionist - and you can taste it in each and every glass."
