Zoo With a View Get in touch with your wild side at the Santa Barbara Zoo. Beach volleyball players often hear lions roaring, and surfers sometimes hear the hoot-hoothooting of a gibbon. Just across the street from the blue Pacific is the Santa Barbara Zoo - the only zoo on earth where lions enjoy an ocean view. Parents call this lush seaside park quaint, but children know it as amazing. Located on 30 acres of botanic gardens just two miles from downtown, this beautiful facility cares for over 500 animals. Start your adventure with an open-air waterfront shuttle ride from Stearns Wharf to the zoo. See creatures like Asian elephants, African lions, lowland gorillas, Chilean flamingos, California condors, and Humboldt penguins up close. Or, tour the zoo during a miniature train ride. Exploring the park feels like traveling to another continent, but many Golden State native species join their exotic counterparts here, too. The zoo is heavily involved in local recovery programs for the Channel Island fox, California condor, and the red-legged frog. What's it like to watch penguins take the plunge from the rocks into the water, hand-feed a Masai giraffe, or come nose-to-beak with the largest North American land bird? Though the words might escape you, the memories definitely will not.
