are more reachable with half a club
more than you think you need.
Here's a common dilemma:
You've played 18 holes in the morning, consumed the requisite lunch of
burger and fries, and although you
don't have another 18-hole round in
you, you're not quite finished with
golf for the day. Enter such great
inventions as the Rick Smith-
designed Threetops, one of the best
par-3 courses I've seen. Nearly every
hole features an extreme climb or
drop or carry over a ravine, and each
is a tribute to Smith, who routed and
designed the layout on this dramatic
site.
Since missing the fairways is not
an option - as there aren't any -
worry instead about missing the
greens, even by a few inches, and
finding your ball hunkered deep
down in thick grass. Holes range from
143 to 219 yards from the back tees
and are well protected by bunkers
clustered around many of the putting
surfaces. Don't expect to score well
here. Just light up a stogie, bring a
beer or two along, and have a blast
on one of the most fun and clever
half-rounds of golf you're ever likely
to play.
five-wood hit to a green with an extra
shelf that was on this day home to the
pin. The par 3s are strong and varied,
ranging from 126 to 202 yards from
the middle tees. The course closes
with a short uphill par 4 with a green
that was mostly invisible, at least from
where I was approaching it, and
guarded by bunkers at the front and
back and some tightly-mown chipping
areas, which created a bit of havoc.
A tip of the hat to northern
Michigan, a fine destination for
summer golf.

When test-driving the Tribute course
at Otsego Club & Resort, my mood
was a bit muted. Maybe because it
was designed by Gary Koch and Rick
Robbins rather than by Rees Jones,
Tom Fazio, or Rick Smith, and I
knew little of these architects.
Yet that faded the moment I
walked into the gorgeous and rustic
clubhouse. The course is a beauty,
sprawling across 1,100 acres of Sturgeon River Valley terrain.
Following a couple of extremely
scenic opening holes, the course gets
really interesting. I played across
ravines and ridges, enjoyed views of
the surrounding wooded countryside,
and negotiated clever challenges like
the par-3 ninth, which requires a
