US Airways - April 2014 - (Page 61)

Santa Barbara Harbor choose from a host of outfitters to snorkel, dive, kayak, and paddleboard to your heart's content. But be warned: Just as Santa Barbara redefines culture, it also redefines the average beach vacation. For starters, there are too many distractions. Take the downtown, where a bevy of boutiques can pry any beach bunny from her blanket. GETTING THERE It's easy: Just fly into LAX or the Santa Barbara Airport. ORE GON N A E San L VA ● Francisco D IF A ● San Jose O ● Monterey R PA Santa ★ Barbara IF N C IA IC ● Los Angeles O C E A N hits to the big three: State Street Ballet, Santa Barbara Symphony, and Opera Santa Barbara. Sitting in your seat, you'll quickly realize you're not just watching a performance, you're experiencing history. Both Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers sacheted across the stage of the Granada, where locals got a sneak preview of a little film called Gone With the Wind. The Lobero is California's oldest continuously operated theater, founded in 1873, and the 80-year-old Victoria Community Hall - now the "New Vic" - just got a second act, thanks to the Ensemble Theatre Company. All this beach action, art, and culture can sure work up an appetite, which is easily sated by a forward restaurant scene. Don't be surprised to see the chefs themselves visiting farmers' markets to select the fish and veggies prepared for the nightly C Downtown Discovery From the 400 block to the 1400 block of State Street, independently owned stores range from the designer (Diani) to the decadent (Chocolate Maya), and from the quirky (Punch Intérieur) to the international (The Italian Pottery Outlet), with all kinds of book dens, java spots, and restaurants in between. For a contemporary vibe, hit up the Funk Zone, between the ocean and Highway 101. Hipster-sleek shops, cool eateries, and nook wine-tasting rooms vie for space in former warehouses and scuba shops. Once downtown, you can't help but notice another only-in-SB facet: a colorful canvas of art galleries and historic theaters. Before long, you've abandoned your shopping bags to spend an afternoon perusing the galleries of the Santa Barbara Art Museum or the Museum of Contemporary Art. Then you can't help but check out the calendars of the Granada, New Vic, and Lobero theaters to catch a show, from local plays to Broadway San ● Diego PHOTOS COURTESY OF VISIT SANTA BARBARA, ZOO PHOTO BY RON BERG, AND HARBOR PHOTO BY J.
