You can forget all your troubles and indulge in the arts. BY WAYNETTE GOODSON I t always feels like a sunshine Saturday in Santa Barbara, where the weather is perpetually beach perfect. From Micheltorena to Gutierrez streets, locals and visitors alike buzz about the winding paseos that lead to restaurants, art galleries, wine-tasting rooms, and cozy boutiques brimming with undiscovered treasures. Not to mention that the downtown setting itself is just as unique as the cluster of cultural venues. Think palm trees, fountains, tropical flowers, and Spanish Revival architecture with red-tile roofs, wrought-iron accents, and graceful arches. If Universal Studios tried to re-create it as a movie set, they'd have a tough time rivaling the real thing. While the Santa Barbara Downtown Organization makes it look easy, they're busy working behind the scenes to maintain and enhance the business, cultural, and nightlife activities. In fact, there's always something happening, from single-night events to multiday festivals, year-round. Every month, 1st Thursdays score big with art, culture, and live entertainment. Restaurants become art galleries and feature live musicians. You might even hear a store owner belt out a jazz ballad.
