Another popular event, the Courthouse Summer Movie Series in the Sunken Gardens is the perfect way to spend a Friday night. It's always packed with film lovers on blankets, picnicking and toasting with friends. Meanwhile, the movies appear on a giant, inflatable screen. And there's always a theme - last year it was Alfred Hitchcock. In October, Pianos on State take over street corners. It's a ten-day period in which pianos perch at various intersections - open for anyone to sit down and tickle the ivories. The Downtown Holiday Parade attracts 50,000 revelers to State Street to cheer on the high-school marching bands, high-flying floats, and the annual arrival of Santa Claus. In tandem with the Santa Barbara International Film Festival (see opposite page), a Film Feast occurs from January 22 through February 1, featuring special lodging offers and prix fixe menus throughout the many theater districts. So nix the Milk Duds and the soda, and go for a fine restaurant serving fresh seafood paired with a smooth chardonnay from a local vineyard. On Thursday, May 22, the Downtown Art & Wine Tour allows art lovers to take a self-guided walking tour of all the art galleries and venues, with local wines and tasty treats at each stop! No matter what time of the year you indulge in an event downtown, it always appears colorful and festive, thanks to the State Street Flags. From the waterfront through the historic area, about 125 decorative banners line the main corridor, representing a variety of community groups and events.
