The museum is the primary provider of visualarts education to the Santa Barbara public schools and works with teachers to help children build creative and analytical-thinking skills through art. "The Museum is a world-class institution that provides incredible resources and programs for our students," says J. Brian Sarvis, former superintendent of Santa Barbara Schools. "We are blessed to have an institution of this caliber so actively engaged in the education of our youth." SBMA's art initiative doesn't stop there. The museum also offers programs in conjunction with permanent collections and special exhibits. Adults can enjoy an educational lecture from an artist or create their own masterpiece in a studio class. For those craving alternate forms of art, "Atelier" events present a hip combination of art, music, and performance. Current exhibits at the museum include Alice Aycock Drawings: Some Stories Are Worth Repeating, Michelle Stuart: Drawn from Nature, and Heavenly Bodies. Through April 20, audiences can experience Aycock's complex drawings, which capture her thoughts on creating her famous large-scale installations and outdoor sculptures. For serene landscapes, visit Michelle Stuart's exhibit until May 4. Stuart's art draws inspiration from the natural world and the cosmos, including photos from the lunar landing in 1969, which she includes in her drawing Moon. Remain in the celestial sphere with Heavenly Bodies, an exhibit made primarily of permanent SBMA pieces that focus on images of astronomy. From May 11-August 31, Living in the Timeless: Drawings by Beatrice Wood will showcase Wood's drawings, which she used to inspire her famous pottery. Left Coast: Recent Acquisitions of Contemporary Art will be on exhibit from May 18-September 7, and will present a compilation of contemporary art by artists in Southern California, collected by SBMA throughout the last five years.
