The Art of Learning At Brooks Institute, education is about expression. Brooks Institute 27 E. Cota Street Santa Barbara, CA 888.276.4999 brooks.edu 82 APRIL 2014 C Students pursue bachelor's and master's degrees in new media, visual, and communication arts at facilities on campuses in Santa Barbara and Ventura. But learning is about more than technology here. The school uses a multi-disciplinary approach to develop visually sophisticated artists, and collaboration is essential in that education. Students exchange ideas with their peers and educators, who are often professionals in their field of study. Brooks Institute also has ongoing educational workshops focused on advancing technique in a chosen art form, like digital photography, Photoshop, and Lightroom. Because workshops are open to the community, experi- usairwaysmag.com enced instructors can facilitate amazing creative endeavors. Collaboration extends to exhibitions, too. At Gallery 27, 300 linear feet of wall space displays the work of students, faculty, and alumni, as well as established artists, including Keith Carter and Joyce Tenneson. The gallery also participates in the Santa Barbara Downtown Organization's Art Walk on the first Thursday of every month. The undergraduate "Portfolio Show," from April 3-May 29, will showcase the graduating students' work in photography, visual journalism, and graphic design. Celebrated fine-art photographer Lindsey Ross graduated from Brooks Institute with an MFA in photography. Today, she runs La Chambre Photographique, a boutique collodion studio in the Funk Zone. Like so many alumni, Ross attributes her commitment to historical and conceptual process to her faculty. "What's rewarding about creating portraits is exploring themes true to the human condition but outside of time," Ross says. "To see that sense of wonder be rediscovered for the tangible and ineffable elements."
