Another travel option is Amtrak's Pacific Surfliner, which offers views of the beautiful California coast from the comfort and convenience of a passenger train. Once you arrive, there's no waiting to begin your Santa Barbara Wine Country tasting experience. The county is comprised of five American Viticultural Areas (AVAs) stretching across the extensive Santa Maria Valley and Santa Ynez Valley, each yielding a variety of grapes including Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Syrah, and Sauvignon Blanc, among others. Bordeaux varietals including Sauvignon Blanc and Cabernet Sauvignon thrive particularly well in the warm Happy Canyon of Santa Barbara appellation. Chardonnay and Pinot Noir flourish in the western AVA of the Sta. Rita Hills and the northern Santa Maria Valley thanks to the cooler temperatures and overnight fog that sweep in from the Pacific Ocean. Ballard Canyon, the county's newest AVA, is making a splash with its Syrah. Santa Barbara Wine Country offers both rural and urban wine-tasting settings, making it easy and fun to sample the vast array of labels available. The entire region is blanketed with beautiful vineyards tucked into wide-open landscapes dotted with cattle and horses.
