Get it out of here. It’s just taking up space.’ It happens. We take it personally.” Again, like many of his fellow micro-distillers, there’s more than a touch of obsession in his approach. “I’ve got this idea of what vodka should taste like, so I try to get to that,” Tito says. “What I’m shooting for is vodka that’s really clean so it doesn’t have any burn, but I don’t like those really lean, airy vodkas that have no personality. I like a vodka that’s got a lot of body and roundness. “When I started off, I didn’t have any money so I didn’t have advertising. The only way I thought I could stay in business was to make it so good that people would go, ‘Wow! Taste this! It’s really good,’ and put it on the market at a price where they’d think it was a really good value as well. I thought that would give me a chance. And that’s what happened.” With good timing, dedication, and hard work, Tito’s business plan has worked so well that he has inspired hundreds of imitators — people with a passion for making craft spirits.
