There’s a moment in everyone’s first round at the resort’s Great Waters course where you finish a hole that just played to a lakeside green and then tee off away from the lake. By the time you reach the next green you’re at the lake again, and you wonder: Did I forget my medication this morning? Such is the nature of Jack Nicklaus’s fine work here, which makes use of coves and inlets and peninsulas in, around, and beside Lake Oconee for a layout that at times resembles Augusta with its tall pines, sculpted pine straw, and blooming azaleas. Nine holes play along the lake, and the ones that don’t build anticipation for those that do. Yet despite many opportunities to hit into the drink, this former home to the Andersen Consulting World Championship of Golf is as difficult to the mind as it is dangerous to the ball. The lake works as hazard, backdrop, MADE IN THE USA and psychological “nyaa nyaa” (thumb on nose, fingers wiggling). In an era when golf architects seem to take pride in their ability to make our game ever more difficult, Jim Engh has figured out what nobody else understands: that scoring well — and even going unreprimanded for less-thanperfect shots — makes golf more fun. His brilliant Creek Club leaves no mediocre shot unrewarded. Even lousy golfers can climb up to the clubhouse from the 18th green feeling great. And there’s just nothing wrong with that. In designing a clever layout that bumps balls back toward fairways, nudges them away from hazards, and kicks them in slow circles toward the pins, Engh also created holes of intense visual beauty. Even given a full week to wage our campaign, the Golf Road Warriors couldn’t experience all the golf and amenities that Reynolds Plantation has to offer. We hope to regroup and launch another foray.
