This cosmopolitan gem on the Mediterranean has an innovative, artistic edge and a young spirit that’s attracting global attention. By Holly C. Corbett | Photos by Ziv Koren ★ Aviv  I srael’s second largest city is a neophyte compared to the historically deeprooted cities of Jerusalem, Nazareth, and Bethlehem. Founded in 1909 on sand dunes outside the centuries-old port city of Jaffa, Tel Aviv is indeed a relative youngster. Despite the city’s youth, it has already earned a spot on UNESCO’s World Heritage List for its historic core, known as the “White City” for its pale, Bauhaus-style buildings. The accolade is no small feat for a budding municipality, considering most other sites on the list are either ancient or are natural wonders. But the city doesn’t take itself too seriously. “Tel Aviv is like a bubble in the rest of Israel,” says Doron Ozer, a city guide, as we share some wine at Radio EPGB, a hip underground bar. I ask him to describe how Tel Aviv is changing, a topic he’s passionate about. The upbeat music and international crowd inside the club reflect the recent shift in Tel Aviv: Tourism has been steadily increasing with a record 2.8 million visitors last year, up from 2 million in 2000. Radio EPGB is off of Rothschild Boulevard — a street known as much for its Bauhaus buildings as its buzzing nightclubs, restaurants, and coffee shops. “Tel Aviv is liberal, gay-friendly, and constantly reinventing itself. The shelf life of a bar or restaurant here is usually about three years before people move on to the next hangout,” says Ozer.
