Lexington, KY the historic neighborhood on second street known as northside Historic District international eatery, theater, and music venue, as well as newer arrivals, such as Shakespeare & Co., an eclectic comfort-food chain that originated in Dubai. All told, nearly 100 restaurants cluster within a one-mile radius of the central business district, a dozen of Folk Arts Capital Just 40 minutes south of Lexington, the town of Berea lives up to its motto “Where Art’s Alive.” The town grew up around Berea College (shown) in the mid-1800s, and today it boasts around 50 art galleries, studios, and gift shops. berea.com 64 which opened in the last year. Other downtown attractions include the Kentucky Theatre, a restored 1920s-era performance hall showing independent and classic films, and the newly improved Triangle Park, featuring tree-lined walkways, park benches, and bubbling fountains, as well as an outdoor ice-skating rink in winter. Robbie Clark, a downtown resident, has seen Lexington go through a major transformation. The editor-andchief of two local lifestyle magazines, Southsider and Chevy Chaser, moved to the city six years ago. “It’s been really interesting to watch and write about this great cultural renaissance in Lexington,” Clark says. “It’s one thing to live in a town with a great cultural identity . . . but it’s really interesting to watch one evolve. It seems like there’s just a citywide con- sciousness and groundswell of emphasis on downtown.” But the city’s No. 1 selling point by far is its unprecedented sense of hospitality, according to CVB President Jim Browder, who moved from Greenville, South Carolina, to Lexington a year ago. “The friendliness of the people here is second to none,” Browder says. “I’ve been all over the United States and typically when you come to an area, people are friendly, but in Lexington, people sustain that friendliness. It goes on for a long, long time. It’s not a false friendliness or a courtesy. It’s a culture.” That culture includes an appreciation for history. Founded in 1775, Lexington grew to be one of the largest and wealthiest towns west of the Allegheny Mountains by the mid-1800s, earning it the nickname the “Athens of the West.” photos (from top) by emily moseley, courtesy of berea college august 2012 usairwaysmag.com http://www.berea.com http://www.usairwaysmag.com
