thrived. The Foundation Board, the
charitable arm of the tournament,
consists of some of the top business
executives in the Piedmont Triad.
“Our regional focus is also helping
us lure new business to the region
while returning our Tour event to its
rightful place as the crown jewel of
the Piedmont Triad sports landscape,”
The Wyndham Championship will be
held at the Sedgefield Country Club,
August 12–18. For details, visit

Long says.
The annual August Tour stop is a
resounding success for many reasons.
Wyndham, the title sponsor, is a global
force in hospitality and is committed
to making the tournament first class
in every respect. Sedgefield is a worldclass course — and the only one on
the PGA Tour that can boast a design
by one of the game’s greatest course
architects, Donald Ross.
Perhaps most important, today
the championship is building a true
legacy. One of the many features
Sedgefield has added since 2008 is
a Wall of Fame located just behind the
18th green. A big attraction for fans,
the wall lists the names of all the tournament’s past winners. Garcia’s name
now sits alongside a few others —
Snead, Hogan, Byron Nelson, Gary
Player, and Seve Ballesteros. That’s
not a bad wall of fame.

One of Wyndham’s marks of
distinction is its long history — this
will be its 74th year — which is unmatched by most other Tour events.
Sam Snead won the tournament eight
times, and his relationship to the event
was so significant that the winner is
awarded the Sam Snead Cup.
Once the Wyndham Championship gained traction, there was still
work to be done in marketing and
sponsorship. In reaching out to surrounding cities and regionalizing its
brand, the people behind the Tour
stop hit an eagle.
“A few years ago, we started using
the Wyndham Championship as a
vehicle to promote regionalism,” Long
says. “We began focusing on the entire
Piedmont Triad as the tournament’s
host. Since then, we’ve enjoyed increased participation from the entire
region — the Piedmont Triad has
adopted this event and taken ownership. And our efforts are working.”
The focus on pushing the tournament’s boundaries outside of Greensboro is one reason the Wyndham has
