and creeks, and the locks’ salmon ladder is their expressway from saltwater to freshwater. In an underground viewing room you can watch as the determined fish push their way up the man-made water ladder toward their destiny. That sort of display of brute force and exertion tends to make one hungry. Saddle back up on the rental bike and catch the wide bike lane toward Golden Gardens Park, about two (perfectly flat) miles west of the locks. As the masts of sailboats moored in the marina come into view, look for a small pink hut on the right. I often smell the sautéed onions before I see Paseo Caribbean Restaurant. There can be a 15-minute line extending down the sidewalk, but it’s worth the wait. Paseo makes the city’s best Cuban sandwiches — falling-apart juicy pork, thickcut sautéed onions, a tangy mayo spread, jalapenos, and a pinch of cilantro on a crusty baguette. Get it to go and bike the remaining half-mile to Golden Gardens for a beach picnic with views of the Olympic Mountains punching through Puget Sound. After returning the bike, stay on Ballard Avenue. The neighborhood’s original main street was frozen in time in the 1940s when nearby Market Street became Ballard’s late-20th century business district.
