US Airways - August 2013 - (Page 41)
— to explore Lake Union’s houseboat neighborhoods. The Sleepless in Seattle house, a postcardperfect bungalow, is the lake’s claim to fame, but
houseboat neighborhoods border the entire lake,
some of them moss-covered relics from the days
when lumberjacks and fishermen built them with
materials salvaged from the city’s lumber mills and
shipyards. The originals now tie to the same rickety
wooden boardwalks that hold multi-million-dollar
two-story mansion-boats.
It’s a foodie’s lake too. Tie up to the docks at
Ivar’s Salmon House (next door to renowned glass
artist Dale Chihuly’s original studio and home) for
classic Northwest clam chowder, salmon, and
halibut. Or stop at Agua Verde for a margarita and
Tex-Mex with the University of Washington
crowd. At the south end, the city’s most eclectic
chef, Tom Douglas, has erected a mini food empire with three of his restaurants all within walking distance of the lake: Cuoco (Italian), Brave
Horse Tavern (Americana pub), and Serious Pie
Westlake (pizza, desserts).
In the afternoon, head north from Gas Works
Park to Green Lake. A three-mile walking trail
circles the lake and offers the city’s best peoplewatching. Golfers, especially those who don’t take
themselves seriously (like me), can rent a putter,
wedge, and ball and play a quick round of nine at
the park’s laid-back pitch-and-putt course. After an
hour-long round, I like to wander toward the lake’s
west end for a round of diving board flopping.
Day 3: Mountains,
Waterfalls, Massages
They call Seattle the Emerald City for its
parks and giant trees. But the big boys grow
in the Cascade Mountains less than an hour from
downtown. I usually take the shortest route possible,
via Interstate 90 toward Snoqualmie Pass. Mount Si
greets you first on the drive east. A well-marked trail
zigzags its way four miles and almost 4,000 feet up,
but for a less straining hike, take the Talus Loop
trail part of the way up the mountain. The oldgrowth forest has a totally different feel from those
in or near the city — open, quiet, ancient. It’s subtle
but unmistakable if you stop and rest, which you’ll
want to do after the thigh-burning trek.
Whether you get to the top of Mount Si for
views of Puget Sound and Mount Rainier or enjoy a
walk through thousand-year-old trees, the digs at
nearby Salish Lodge & Spa will cap a summer
adventure weekend with indulgence. The natural
