Hands-On Experience photos Courtesy of bowie state university This year, the university launched a new Education Innovation Initiative (EI2) aimed at inspiring young people’s interest in science (and in possibly becoming future Bowie students). To accomplish this, Bowie State is partnering with industry leader Lockheed Martin and the Prince George’s County school district. The alliance’s lead coordinator, alumnus Traviss Green, graduated in 2001 with a computer technology degree from Bowie State and now works as chief technology transition officer at Lockheed Martin. He credits his alma mater for sparking his interest in computer technology. “We want to build the future leaders of tomor- row and we want them to advance the field, not just get the job,” Green says. He adds that students learn best from hands-on experience in the industry. With this new project, area high school students and Bowie students will work directly with industry leaders to learn about science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics. “This is a model we think will be emulated across the country,” Burnim says. usairwaysmag.com august 2013 59 http://www.usairwaysmag.com
