Celebrate Opera A MASTERClass University of Kentucky Opera Theatre shines. The University of Kentucky is well-known for its longstanding tradition of producing outstanding basketball players. Beyond the court, UK has become a standout in a different ﬁeld - opera. University of Kentucky Opera Theatre (UKOT) has gained national and international attention as a place where young singers can launch careers that take them to the world's most coveted stages. Under the direction of Dr. Everett McCorvey, UKOT graduates have performed at the Metropolitan Opera, Chicago Lyric Opera, San Francisco Opera, Houston Grand Opera, on Broadway, in # CLOCKWISE FROM TOP LEFT: The Marriage of Figaro, 2013; Les Miserables, 2013; Die Fledermaus, 2010; Falstaff, 2012; and Romeo et Juliette, 2011 102 AUGUST 2014 usairwaysmag.com television series, and on concert stages around the world. UKOT was among the ﬁrst universities to present the blockbuster musicals The Phantom of the Opera (2012) and Les Misérables (2013), as well as the university premieres of Rachel Portman's The Little Prince (2005) and André Previn's A Streetcar Named Desire (2003). Other ﬁrsts were the world premiere of Thomas Pasatieri's The Hotel Casablanca in 2007 with the San Francisco Merola Program, and the 2010 world premiere of Pasatieri's God Bless Us Everyone with the Dicapo Opera Theatre. With a large pool of talented students, UKOT is able to present operas completely cast with undergraduates; the Undergraduate Studio recently presented the premiere of Daron Hagen's Little Nemo in Slumberland in collaboration with Sarasota Opera. http://www.usairwaysmag.com
