Celebrate Opera OPERA Treasures Central City Opera's summer music festival connects with audiences. As the ﬁfth oldest opera company in the nation, Central City Opera has continued to reinvent itself and has withstood the test of time. Built by miners in 1878 in the gold-mining town of Central City, Colorado, the opera house still draws large crowds for its annual summer festival. At ﬁrst a celebration of traditional works, the Central City Opera Festival has expanded to feature classics and contemporary works that Central City Opera will appeal to a broad audience. The 2015 Festival will feature ﬁve 124 Eureka St. Central City, CO productions, from a beloved classic to 303.292.6700 a contemporary piece that requires the centralcityopera.org audience to wear blindfolds. # The season opens on July 11, 2015, with La Traviata. Verdi's tragic love story is widely considered the most performed opera worldwide. Man of La Mancha follows on July 18 through August 9, 2015. The whimsical Tony award-winning musical follows Don Miguel De Cervantes as he awaits a hearing from the Spanish Inquisition. Hoping to engage with a broader audience, the 2015 Festival will feature three mobile productions performed in alternate spaces in Central City and throughout Colorado. Church venues throughout the state will serve as the backdrop for The Prodigal Son, the well-known Biblical story of the same name. Audience members will be asked to wear blindfolds during the a capella opera The Blind. Making its regional premiere is the rarely performed Don Quixote and the Duchess, based on a single episode in the titular novel.
