Celebrate Opera THE By Roger Pines Lyric Opera celebrates 60 years of world-class productions. According to general director Anthony Freud, the company is continuing its tradition of giving audiences "a vibrant, dynamic, worldclass season that will excite experienced operagoers and newcomers alike." Having begun its ascent to world prominence in 1954 with Mozart's Don Giovanni, it's only ﬁtting that Lyric Opera of Chicago should kick off its diamond jubilee with that same work, frequently proclaimed "the perfect opera." Lyric Opera of Polish baritone Mariusz Kwiecien portrays Chicago the seductive antihero, with music director Sir Andrew Davis conducting a brand-new 20 N. Add to the mix two miracles of German opera - Strauss' Capriccio (with Renée Fleming as leading lady) and Wagner's mighty Tannhäuser Tannhäuser. As a climax for the season, Lyric Opera of Chicago presents Mieczyslaw Weinberg's The Passenger Passenger, a poignant 20th-century masterpiece. The company is moving beyond grand opera, too, with Broadway (a new production of Rodgers and Hammerstein's Carousel), klezmer opera (Wlad Marhulets' The Property in Skokie and Hyde Park), and a new children's opera (Matthew Aucoin's Second Nature at Lincoln Park Zoo). With "Long Live Passion!" as its motto, Lyric Opera of Chicago looks forward to its next 60 years.
