OPERA Reimagined New works and creative stagings ﬁll seats for Minnesota Opera. # PHOTOS COURTESY OF MICHAL DANIEL/MINNESOTA OPERA In 1963, the world premiere of composer Dominick Argento's The Masque of Angels sparked the creation of a small opera company spotlighting the rare and avant-garde. More than 50 years later, nurtured by the supportive and adventurous culture of the Twin Cities, Minnesota Opera is one of the nation's leading opera companies, admired as an innovative creator of compelling operas, programs, and new works. The company brings together artists worldwide to create ﬁve operas each season that expand the art form, nurture artists, enrich audiences, and contribute to the vitality of the community. The company's 2007 premiere of The Grapes of Wrath by composer Ricky Ian Gordon and librettist Michael Korie was a hit with audiences and critics alike - Variety hailed it as "nothing short of incandescent." Its success spurned Minnesota Opera to launch the New Works Initiative (NWI), a pioneering movement designed to invigorate the art form. The NWI funded the commissions of the 2012 Pulitzer Prize-winning Silent Night by composer Kevin Puts and librettist Mark Campbell, Doubt by composer Douglas J. Cuomo and librettist John Patrick Shanley in 2013, and The Manchurian Candidate (also by Puts and Campbell), which will premiere in March FROM TOP: 2015 in St. Paul.
