The company performs popular and lesser-known works at the historic Sarasota Opera House, an opulent, Mediterranean Revival-inspired venue renovated to enrich the opera experience. Maestro Victor DeRenzi has been at the helm of Sarasota Opera as artistic director and principal conductor for 33 seasons. A renowned Verdi specialist, DeRenzi initiated the company's Verdi Cycle in 1989, an ambitious plan to perform all of Verdi's operas and non-operatic music. The Cycle concludes in 2016, when the opera will have earned the distinction of being the only company in the world to have performed every work composed by Verdi. Entering its 30th year, Sarasota Youth Opera cultivates the next generation of opera lovers by providing children the opportunity to experience opera through vocal instruction, participation in professional productions, and more. The program is unique, as it welcomes everyone who applies, regardless of skill level or ability to pay. Sarasota Opera has also gained international acclaim for staging obscure and rarely performed operas as part of its Masterworks Revival Series. The Fall 2014 season will feature Leoncavallo's Pagliacci. The 2015 Winter Festival will commence with Puccini's melodrama Tosca, Mozart's The Marriage of Figaro, and Rimsky-Korsakov's The Golden Cockerel, a seldom-performed work Sarasota Opera that is a showcase for coloratura sopranos.
