Celebrate Opera STAGE Presence By Callie Young Renowned soprano Angela Brown brings opera to the masses. # 124 AUGUST 2014 usairwaysmag.com PHOTOS COURTESY OF RONI ELY/JEJ ARTISTS Long before she made her memorable 2004 Metropolitan Opera debut in the title role of Aida, Angela Brown was disheartened by the lack of diversity she saw in the audience. As her career flourished, she vowed to dispel the myths about opera and expose more audiences to the genre. It was while traveling from her hometown of Indianapolis to New York City for a performance that she came up with the concept for her trailblazing onewoman show, Opera . . . From a Sistah's Point of View. Through arias, Broadway classics, spirituals, and edgy commentary, Opera . . . From a Sistah's Point of View entertains and enlightens audiences of all musical tastes. After all, opera is storytelling through song. JEJ Artists "These stories are about peoples of the 404.663.4135 world," Brown says. "Opera is about everyjejartists.com body - rich, poor, people in love, people janet@jejartists.com mad about people in love - basically, life . . . . It might be a different setting in a different time, but it's still reflective of people from all places and walks of life." With her dynamic soprano voice and charisma on-stage and off, Brown doesn't limit her repertoire to opera. She has won acclaim for her renditions of African American spirituals, and has performed with symphonic pops legends Jack Everly and Marvin Hamlisch. She collaborated with American composer Richard Danielpour on A Woman's Life, an orchestral song cycle set to the poetry of Maya Angelou. Next year she'll appear in Opera Philadelphia's premiere of Charlie Parker's Yardbird, about the life of the jazz legend. Opera . . . From a Sistah's Point of View remains her artistic "baby," having performed it internationally for intimate audiences, in packed concert halls, and for school children. No matter what role she takes on next, Brown will find a way to share her passion for opera. "I would like to think my mark in opera is to bring people together," says Brown. "They don't have to talk a certain way, dress a certain way, or even look a certain way. I want them to know that everybody's welcome at my house - opera house, that is! Just choose your seat and sit down."
