different decades. When he won his fourth in 1950,
the PGA TOUR called the Sedgefield crowd the
largest ever to witness a winter tour event: Organizers even ran out of tickets and had to make do with
IBM punch cards from a local textile company.
And when Snead returned for his 25th GGO in
Fairways
& Greens
1965, he won No. 8 at age 52 - the oldest person
ever to win on the PGA TOUR.
Against this backdrop, the GGO thrived as one
of the TOUR's mainstays, earning the reputation as
the Green Bay of tournament golf. Former PGA
TOUR Commissioner Deane Beman once called it
"the epitome of the community-based tournament."
