“Berkeley” vs. “Cal” “berkeley” wins Nobel Prizes in Stockholm, Sweden. “cal” wins gold medals at the Olympics. Ironically, few people realize that both names refer to the same university. While Berkeley, also called Uc berkeley, or the longer version University of california, berkeley, is an acknowledged academic and research powerhouse, “Cal” is a bona fide athletics superstar with 300 student athletes and alumni having won 178 medals in the modern Olympics, including 17 at the 2012 Summer Games in London. Whether you’re looking for cutting-edge academics or a top-class sports program, look no further than Berkeley. Or is it Cal? “Being at Berkeley exposes me to a wide diversity of people and ideas and to new ways to think and grow.” —Mia Lincoln, senior generous donors. UC Berkeley’s new Middle Class Access Plan provides awards for students whose family income ranges from $80,000 to $140,000. Such philanthropy flows in many directions on campus. Despite the nation’s most challenging economic environment since the Great Depression, nearly $395 million in gifts and pledges was raised by UC Berkeley in the past fiscal year. A give-back ethos among students and alumni has led to UC Berkeley enlisting more Peace Corps volunteers (3,000 plus) in the organization’s history than any other school. The campus also is the current leading source of new educators in the Teach for America program. And ideas created and incubated at pioneering UC Berkeley bear fruit — even mushrooms — for the world. For two young alumni, an “aha!” moment in a business-ethics class led to Back to the Roots Ventures, an award-winning company that converts coffee grounds into gourmet mushrooms in a grow-it-at-home kit. Nikhil Arora says realizing that he and Alejandro Velez could provide jobs and nutrition from waste “was so cool.” Spirit of Giving UC Berkeley is renowned for helping all admitted students afford an education, including those who are first in their families to attend college, underrepresented minorities, the undocumented, former foster children, and military veterans. One-quarter of this year’s freshmen come from families whose incomes are less than $40,000 a year. No tuition is required of 40 percent of undergraduates, who receive help from the government, institutional funds, and usairwaysmag.com December 2012 57 http://www.usairwaysmag.com
