Entertainment. # Small Treasures, Big Fun At the Mini Time Machine Museum of Miniatures B igger isn’t always better — something that Patricia and Walter Arnell recognized when they started collecting miniatures in the 1970s. BY HERB STRATFORD Today, the Mini Time Machine Museum of Miniatures houses their extensive collection, ﬁlling over 10,000 square feet of gallery space. Viewing the Ardara Irish House (ca. 1870) in the History Gallery More than just a collection, the museum’s interactive space encourages exploration and builds appreciation for the art of miniatures through a mix of hands-on activities and events. And with intricate, detailed miniatures depicting everything from an 18th-century silversmith’s shop to an enchanted fairy castle, it’s no wonder that visitors have made the museum one of Tucson’s favorite destinations since it opened three years ago. The creative exhibit concept was designed by Claro Creative Studios of Glendale, California, the ﬁrm that planned the Aerospace Museum of California in Sacramento and the Science Fiction Museum in Seattle. Their unique presentation makes the experience a hit with children of all ages as well as adults with varying interests — including history buffs and antiques aﬁcionados. For example, the Enchanted Realm features a life-size tree with built-in displays and a glass ﬂoor with exhibits underfoot. Once you’ve left fantasyland, travel the world through the collection of miniatures from other cultures, including France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Thailand, and others. And while you’re looking around, remember to look back — the oldest piece dates to 1742.
